A replacement dwelling built on classical proportion.
Becksteddle House replaces an undistinguished existing house at Colemore, deep in the South Downs National Park. The brief was a home of quiet authority, contemporary in comfort, but rooted in the Georgian language of proportion that sits so naturally in this landscape.
We designed the house around classical proportioning systems, using the golden ratio to set the rhythm of the elevations and the relationship of solid to void. The result reads as calm and inevitable: a building that looks as though it has always belonged on its plot.
The planning strategy
Replacement dwellings in a National Park are tightly controlled, particularly on floor area. Our integrated approach paired the design with a planning strategy that justified a generously scaled home, securing a larger floor area than standard policy would ordinarily allow, on the strength of the design quality and the site's specific circumstances.
